A good standing cross survival, just 6m SE of the S door of St Philip’s, Brinkhill, with the base, shaft and knop complete and a restored head added.
The socket stone is plain and square, measuring 0.79m N-S and 0.78m E-W, with a slight chamfer around the top. The shaft is chamfered to octagonal with no significant stops (although the SS hole is square/leadlined). The shaft is all in one piece – no joins. At its base, the shaft is 0.31m N-S and 0.22m E-W tapering to 0.17m N-S and 0.15m E-W just below the knop – it is 1.98m high from base to knop. The knop is complete and is octagonal and ‘embattled’ or billeted. With the knop added, then the whole medieval part stands c. 2.25m high.
The cross head (a calvary) is modern with a crucifixion on one side and Virgin and child on the other. It looks top heavy and is probably a copy of Somersby.
There is a good depiction of this cross (pre-restoration) on the Nattes drawing of Brinkhill church c.1800.
