There is a modern/restored cross on a remnant of the village green in the village of Newton. It is listed as a 19th C cross as follows: ‘Square base block supports a square shaft which runs via stop chamfers to an octagonal section. At the top a roll moulded cornice is surmounted by the base only of a tapering cross shaft enriched with pellets’. (Not a terribly helpful description!). It is shown (as ‘Stone’) on the 1888 O.S. 25” map.

Pevsner (p.575) calls it a much-restored cross and it may be that there is some medieval fabric incorporated within it. The cross base (which is set on a tall step or base block) is of modest proportions and appears to have the present shaft set ON it (as opposed to IN it), however there does appear to be a filled rectangular socket cut into it, possibly from an earlier phase of use.

The cross head is eroded on its upper section and in poor condition. The base is subsiding.
