A cross base/socket stone for a standing cross has been placed on the concrete slabs at the east side of the south porch of Barrowby church and is obviously not in situ. It is c. 70 cm square with upper part (unusually) worked to circular shape. The square part is c. 18 cm high, the round part c.15 cm high – whole stone about c.33 cm. The socket is c.30 cm square and 16 cm deep with damage on its northern side.

It is made of good quality limestone but is quite knocked about – The SW corner is missing, other corners much worn and rounded, and the socket is damaged (see sketch and photos).

It is worth noting that there is a stone carved with interlace design set into the south wall of the chancel. Older sources identify this as a cross shaft but E & S have identified it as a fragment of a grave cover. They have published it in the Corpus – Here
