Weston’s second cross is possibly the remains of a wayside cross that was found at Beggar’s Bush crossroads in August 1895. A brief report in the Stamford Mercury of 23 August 1895 states: ‘the base of the old parish cross has been unearthed at Weston, on the road leading to St John’s. It is an interesting relic of bygone days.’
The cross comprises an octagonal socket stone with a square, lead-lined socket containing a fragment of shaft. It is stated that the cross: ‘Was removed to Weston Churchyard and is now inside the Church’. A photograph of the cross base appears in the Weston and Weston Hills Millennium book, and is reproduced above.
DS/HH have not yet recorded this cross and no detailed description or dimensions are currently available.
As an added confusion, Nattes has a drawing of a four-stepped cross base labelled ‘Weston Cross’, but as noted elsewhere, this is probably Westborough cross, wrongly attributed.
