Rippingale was granted a Market Charter for a Wednesday market in 1258 and this cross, at the south edge of Rippingale’s village green, may have been the market cross. The 1887 O.S. map shows ‘Cross’ on the small green east of the churchyard. Davies notes that in 1913 it was protected by railings.

The socket stone (thought to be c. 0.8m square with moulded and chamfered corners) is now almost completely buried – there may also be one or more buried steps.

The shaft is 0.27m square at the base and is stopped and chamfered to octagonal, tapering and rising to a height of 1.39m. The shaft terminates in a flat top with a small depression in the centre – possibly to receive an upper stone?
