There is a socket stone just a few metres south of the south porch of St Nicholas’s church at North Cotes. Although only the socket stone remains, its position close to the main church door is probably the original location for a churchyard cross.
The stone is 0.65m x 0.65m square with c.0.4m above ground; the base is buried. Its corners are moulded and chamfered to octagonal with a (nearly) square socket hole. The socket is 0.26m (N-S) by 0.25m (E-W).
The stone is weathered into a series of horizontal patterns but we do not think any of this is carving, nor is there any decoration at the chamfered corners.
