There is a cross base with a fragment of shaft c. 8.5m south of the nave of St Benedict’s Church at Haltham on Bain. There are some interesting stones which have been placed on the cross base, but none seem to relate to the cross itself. These are briefly described on Alison’s survey sheet.
The socket stone is set on a buried foundation which extends c.0.2m beyond the cross base on all sides. The socket stone is a single limestone block 0.90 x 0.91m standing to a height of about 0.27m above the ground surface. The upper edge of the stone is chamfered.
A fragment of shaft is set into the socket stone with lead. It is 0.30 x 0.29m in section at the base rising through moulded and chamfered corners in tapering octagonal section to a height of 0.89m. The top of the shaft fragment is flat and has a number of small holes, some with iron and lead fixings still present. These could relate to later use as a sundial. There are also holes at the bottom of each of the north and south faces of the shaft, and a smaller hole in the middle of the east face. The full height of the cross is about 1.1m.
