Grimoldby has a fine medieval cross base having an unusually tall section of cross shaft (2.64m). This has been extended and given a modern cross head relatively recently.

It is suggested (in the listing description) that Grimoldby cross has been moved into the churchyard from its original site at the crossroads (presumably where the road to Manby crosses the road to Saltfleetby). The booklet ‘A History of Grimoldby’ published in 1997 states: ‘It was moved to its present site when the churchyard was extended and may have been restored at the same time’.

No cross is shown in the churchyard in 1888 (1st ed O.S. 25” map) but ‘Cross remains of’ is shown on the 1905 edition suggesting that the cross had been moved by this date. It was probably moved again when the churchyard was extended – at a date not known, but post 1947 (from O.S. maps). It was probably ‘restored’ as part of this second move.

The socket stone, which rests on a modern concrete plinth, is 0.85 x 0.85m square at the base with moulded and chamfered corners rising to a top of octagonal section. It stands c, 0.45m high.

Fixed into the socket stone with lead is the lower part of the shaft, rectangular in section at the base (0.36 x 0.30m) and rising above moulded and chamfered corners in tapering octagonal section. Both the socket stone and the lower 2.64m of the shaft are medieval in date, while the upper part of the shaft, which continues the octagonal taper upwards, is a modern restoration. The cross head, also modern, is a gabled crucifix.
