Kennulph’s Stone was one of the several boundary stones marking the lands of Crowland Abbey. The HER states: After a succession of lawsuits about the possessions of Crowland Abbey in the marshes, and the appointing, in 1389, of a commission to enquire into the marking of boundaries, new stone crosses were erected at Kenulfston and elsewhere. In 1394 men of Deeping destroyed the cross and were imprisoned in Lincoln Castle, where they remained till their friends set up another cross at Kenulfston.

The stone was re-erected in 1817 as county boundary, marking where Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire meet.

On our field visit we recorded that it seems to be an ancient socket stone with the more recent (1817) marker stone set on its top. As well as the date the marker stone has No. 1 H (?Holland) on one side and No. K (Kesteven?) on the other. The base stone beneath the socket stone has a neat chamfer on it and is probably also of 1817 vintage. Hard to find, but well worth the mud and wet feet! The flood bank on which we parked had a nice set of brick clad concrete pill boxes set into its side.
